Panama Canal Expansion Progress Update – December 2015
The largest infrastructure project since the waterway’s original construction, the Panama Canal Expansion Program will create a new lane of traffic along the Canal through the construction of a new set of locks, increasing the waterway’s capacity. The new locks will have three chambers, water-saving basins, lateral filling and emptying system & rolling gates.
To provide its workforce with the necessary experience to safely operate the expanded Panama Canal, the pilots and tug captains will now have a new Scale Model Maneuvering Training Facility. The design and construction of a scale manned model is based on a real ship, the only difference is that it is reduced to a particular scale. This training facility is located parallel to Culebra Cut.
